Centering is something that many books and websites gloss over, combining or equating it with grounding. They are not the same thing, however, and it's important for every witch to understand the difference and how to perform each.
Centering is the process of focusing your mind and energy, preparing you for magickal work or meditation. When you center yourself, you "find your center." Some of us may have had one of those days where we felt "disconnected" or "out of touch" with ourselves and/or our bodies. Centering is a way to reconnect and your physical, ethereal, and astral self. It focuses your attention, quiets your mind, and prepares you for the magickal work you want to perform. Below are some techniques I use.
Breathing Exercise
This is the same Breathing Exercise in the Meditation section. It is also a way to center yourself.
Body Centering
This is a method I learned in an animal communication workshop.
Sit in a chair with both feet on the floor and your hands on your thighs. Cross your ankles in front of you; notice which leg is on top and which is on bottom. Now hold your arms straight out in front of your body. Cross your wrists the opposite way that you crossed your legs, palms down, the outside of your palms and pinkies touching. For example, if you crossed your ankles right over left, cross your wrists left over right. Now twist your hands so that your palms are facing, and interlace your fingers (like you're "holding hands" with yourself). Now, bend your elbows and bring your hands down toward your stomach, then continue the motion up through your chest. Rest your hand comfortably against your chest and close your eyes. Breathe deeply for several minutes, as outlined in the Breathing Exercise, focusing on your diaphragm as your core.
