The concept of the chakras is Indian in origin (chakra is a Sanskrit word), but has been gaining popularity in the West along with other Eastern practices such as meditation. They are vortexes of energy located along the spine, toward the center of the body, which are constantly in motion. They help the body’s energy flow smoothly and regularly. So, in theory, keeping your chakras in good working order is the psychic analogue to keeping your colon in good working order – it’s absolutely necessary for proper health and disposal of waste (in the case of chakras, psychic waste, which your chakras can help recycle when functioning properly).
There are traditionally seven major chakras (root, spleen, solar plexus, heart, throat, brow/third eye, and crown), but many more exist, particularly in the hands and feet. This is actually a very important point: Our bodies and energy fields are constantly filled with energy in every place; however, power centers of energy vary throughout the body. While focusing on chakra work, remember that these are not the only places in your body that contain energy, and that they are simply centers of powerful, compact energy that can be very useful in spiritual work.
