The Jazz Project

The Jazz Project is an effort to develop platform independent tools to help manage and analyze elements of a computing environment. It is to a traditional command shell and system utilities what a butterfly is to a caterpillar. The Jazz toolset is developed primarily in Java, and many of the basic elements in Jazz tools are also elements of the Java language.

Jazz is not for everyone. Jazz embraces freedom of expression, yet respects its roots and traditions. It blends the best of the new with the best of the old. While Jazz is in a constant state of flux, the old standards are never forgotten.

It is in this spirit that the Jazz tools hope to follow. The two fundamental tools are Jazz, and Twin. Jazz consists of the Jazz language, a hybrid programming and command language; and the Jazz user interface, through which one composes Jazz directives and analyzes their results. This is done through two major components, the Jazz Control Window, and the Jazz Output Window. Both windows have customizable input and output panes, and facilities for manipulating the data streams mapped to these panes. The Control Window adds a Composition Pane, the Jazz language, and facilities to control the flow of events in a Jazz session.
