Dick Allen: Beane Count Influence

by Kevin A. Harlow, June 6, 2002

Bill James has made many comments about Dick Allen having a big negative affect on his teams. What follows is a quick and dirty examination of the impact of Dick Allen's comings and goings in terms of Rob Neyer's Beane Count metric, which uses a rank order approach for BB, HR, BBA, and HRA. As can be seen below, Allen made his new teams much better and the teams that he left were worse off.

Coming:

Team -- delta Rnk(BB) -- delta Rnk(HR)
63 to 64 Phillies -- (-5) -- 0
69 to 70 Cardinals -- (-1) -- (-2)
70 to 71 Dodgers -- (-1) -- (-2)
71 to 72 WhiteSox -- (-1) -- (-1)
74 to 75 Phillies -- (-8) -- (-7)

Average delta Rnk(BB) = -3.2
Average delta Rnk(HR) = -2.4

Going:

Team -- delta Rnk(BB) -- delta Rnk(HR)
69 to 70 Phillies -- 6 -- 7
70 to 71 Cardinals -- (-3) -- (-1)
71 to 72 Dodgers -- 0 -- 0
74 to 75 WhiteSox -- (-3) -- 10
76 to 77 Phillies -- 0 -- 0

Average delta Rnk(BB) = 0.0
Average delta Rnk(HR) = 3.2

Net Effect:

Averaging the comings and goings, he improved his team's BB rank by 1.6 spots and improved his team's HR rank by 2.8 spots.

note: does not include last season in Oakland - he only had ~170 AB and was washed up - also came right after Finley's attempted fire sale.
