100 Good Wishes Quilt
Project 2000

introduction | photos | instructions

How to participate on the year 2000 Quilt Project:

One generous APC list member, Teri, is the keeper of the lists of people who wish to exchange fabric squares. She starts a new list of 25 people every 3-4 months.

  • To participate, please email Teri and she will add your name to the current list of people and send you instructions on what size and type of fabric squares to exchange.
  • When you have finished your quilt, please take a picture and email it to Joanna. She will post the pictures on this web site! If you prefer to send it by regular mail, contact Joanna by email and she will send you her mailing address.

Ideas for selecting fabric squares:

  • Select a fabric that is meaningful to you.
  • 100% cotton fabric is best, as it washes and wears better.
  • Ask lots of other friends and family members to give you squares of fabric so that eventually you will have 100 squares. (In China, these quilts were originally made from garments of family and friends, which would surround the child with luck/good wishes.)

Assembling your quilt:

There are two obvious options for assembling your quilt - do it yourself, or hire someone to make it for you. We've provided some helpful hints for making the quilt yourself. If you want to someone to make it for you, there are several people who have already made several of these quilts:

  • Teri's (the keeper of the lists) mother is willing and able to assembly quilts for adoptive parents. You can reach her at ACDCtoo@webtv.net .
  • Pam Smith is a professional quilter who has made several of these quilts. You can visit her website to see her work and to contact her - www.originalquilts.com

There are many different ways one could make the 100 Good Wishes Quilt. These hints assume that you've received 2 5" square pieces of fabric. To help you get started, below are some general instructions compiled by several people participating in this year's quilt project (if you have other tips to add to this list, please contact the webmaster). More helpful quilting tips are available from China adoptive parent Shawnalee Whitney (including a great idea to make assembly quick and easy).

  • Cut one of the 5" squares down to 4.5" x 4.5". Finished square size will be 4" (use the standard 1/4" seam allowance for all seams).
  • The other 5" square can be used in a memory book to accompany the quilt and to make a doll quilt with your child when she/he is older (with 2.5" squares). Or if you have two children you can make 1 quilt for each of them.
  • There are many different ways to assemble your 100 squares. Check the photos page of this site for ideas.
  • For the backing you will need about 1.5 yards of 45" wide cotton fabric.
  • A rotary cutter and mat will make your project easier.
  • Quilting by Machine by Singer is a good reference book (available at most fabric stores).
