Boxers

Background: The Boxer organization is the group which provides agents to Ying, for the purpose of enforcement. It was decided after the gang ambush in Hong Kong Ying needed a group of select agents to aid in their enforcement duties. The Triads turned to their ancient allies, the secret Boxer cult, to provide those services.

The secret society of the Boxers existed many years ago. It is believed the organization was actually formed before the Opium War. The Opium War was a battle between the Chinese and an alliance between English and French. The English and French easily defeated the Chinese forces, forcing them to submit to the trading companies exploiting Chinese resources. Mainly, this exploitation took place concerning the crop of opium, then legal in Europe. It was during this war England gained control of Hong Kong, and the French gained control of Indochina.

The Boxers worked quietly behind the scenes for many years, training in monasteries in the famous Shao-Lin martial arts. The organization sabotaged different operations of the English and French for a number of years. Finally, with secret support of the Chinese government and the Five Ancestors Society, the Boxers came out of hiding. The Boxers led a great rebellion against the foreign troops and companies exploiting Chinese resources. A majority of the Boxers believed since they were on the side of good, the bullets of the English and French forces would not harm them. The organization attacked a number of English and French outposts with their superior numbers, and were slaughtered by the English and French superior weaponry. The Boxer Rebellion came to an end with a negotiated settlement, created by the fledgling United States. As such, the Chinese forever harbored a resentment for European powers, but held a special place for the United States.

The Boxer cult went back underground after this debacle. To protect themselves from being hunted down, they allied themselves with the newly beginning Triads of the time, the successors to the Five Ancestors Society. As the Triads quickly grew in power, the cult became almost forgotten in China, which is what the cult wanted. In 1911, the Triads were in control of China, but by 1946, and the communist takeover of China, most of the Triads moved to Taiwan and Hong Kong. Those that remained in China were still allied with the Boxers, and quietly followed them to obscurity to cover up their continuing operations.

Since the reemergence of the Triads, the Boxer cult decided to become a bit more active again by supplying Boxers for Ying. These Boxers have trained all of their lives in the martial arts. The select group given to Ying includes all the members who at the time knew the secret of the Iron skin. The Iron skin, unlike the legend, cannot fully reduce the damage of weapons, but does blunt the damage somewhat so bullets and weapons are not quite as deadly. With Ying becoming more and more known, the Boxers are slowly regaining their lost power within Chinese communities around the world.

Personality: The Boxers are fanatics. They have been trained from birth to hate those opposing the resurrection of the old Rebellion. The original goal of the Rebellion was the expulsion of foreigners from China. The goal has changed slightly. It is now the goal of the new Boxer Rebellion to regain control of China from the communists who now control the country. The Boxers have trained their bodies for the cause, even farther than the original Boxers did, in an attempt to get to the level of purity needed to perform their crusade.

Quote: "The Rebellion shall live again, foreigner scum."

Powers/Tactics: The Boxers are first and foremost martial artists. They have studied under the Shao-Lin schools of fighting, trying to perfect their bodies to ultimate physical perfection. In doing so, this reflects upon their fighting style.

The Boxers will attempt to engage their target with martial arts attacks first and foremost. If they cannot close, the Boxers will use throwing knives and weapons to attack their opponents until they are able to close in. Thanks to the original Boxer Rebellion, the Boxers do not like to use technological weaponry. They see it as the tools of their oppressors. Instead, the Boxers use traditional Chinese weaponry to combat their foes.

Appearance: The Boxers are the agents of Ying. Almost uniformly, they are dressed in Shao-Lin style outfits, with traditional Chinese weapons only. The outfits consist of a white pant with floppy legs, and a red long-sleeved loose fitting shirt, with two yellow stripes down the front of the shirt. They also do not wear any armor, yet have trained their bodies to resist the effect of small caliber bullets through use of the Iron skin technique of the Shao-Lin monks. The agents are experts in Chinese martial arts style.

Master of Crime's Notes: I have simple instructions for the Boxers. Find their hideout in China and recruit them to our side and away from their traditional allies, the Triads. It has been rumored that the Boxer cult is in fact an old Triad. Even if such is true, the martial arts of these monks and fanatics would be a great asset for my emerging organization.

Roleplaying Tips: The Boxers are normally seen in two situations. The first situation is when accompanied by one of the members of Ying. This occasion occurs when the group is to assassinate or attack a normal person with no bodyguards to protect the target. In this case, the Boxers are the primary attack force in the mission.

The other case is in either an attack against a lone vigilante or a group of vigilantes. Against a lone vigilante, usually the entire Ying group is present. The Boxers, however, are used mainly to cover escape in this situation and not for actual combat. When a group of vigilantes are encountered, however, the entire Ying group, paranormals and agents, are on the front line. Ying, using this tactic, should be very much in control of the situation, or else they would not attempt an attack against the vigilantes. Very rarely does this last condition happen, as Ying likes to ambush members one at a time over an attack against an entire group.

Champions Conversion: For Champions, the Boxers are a little underpowered actually, despite looking at their point total. Increasing the Boxers’ PD and ED from their armor by 5 points and adding a couple of levels more in their martial arts improves them somewhat. Other things to make them tougher could include giving them a couple more damage classes with their martial arts, or raising the damage on their killing attack weapons by 1d6 each.
