The Engagement I always knew that when the time came, I would want to propose in a unique way. Since I'm 36, I have had many years to think about how I would do it when the time came! I had thought about going to the top of the Eiffel tower in Paris, writing to the Tonight show and having them work it into a skit, on stage at a concert of one of our favorite groups, billboards, skywriting, etc. I must have had hundreds of ideas running though my mind over the years! When the time came and I knew I wanted to propose, I wanted to do it as soon as I bought the ring! I bought the ring in late January and didn't propose to March 11th, talk about burning a hole in your pocket!
I was working on a couple different ideas and finally decided to do it on the radio. Since Oct 2001 I had been in contact with Tommy Sablan, the producer of San Diego's number 1 morning show, Jeff and Jer. I was working with Tommy to let me do it on the air when I was ready to propose. He was working with me and things were looking good for valentines day, but fell thru because someone else convinced Tommy to let him propose to his girl before I could. What's worse is the guy was a dork and it didn't go over to good! After that I tried to get Tommy to let me do my proposal, but since they had a bad experience with the last guy and the fact they had just done a proposal and didn't want to do another so soon afterwards, it wasn't looking like it was going to happen. Finally after lots of convincing (OK, maybe call it begging, brown nosing, kissing butt, etc) and a little help from Cliff Albert, an aquintance at church who is well known in the media in San Diego, they let me in the door.
I got Kathy's boss in on the plan and things were rolling! Kathy's boss asked her to come with him on a sales call to the radio station. When they got there for their sales call, Tommy, the shows producer, took them on a tour of the TV and Radio studio. When they were in the radio studio Jeff and Jer were taking open phone calls on any subject. I called in disguising my voice (well at least I thought I was, after hearing the tape, it pretty well sounds like me being a nerd!) and talked about proposing to my girlfriend and that I was looking for a unique way to propose. I was actually on my cell phone in an office down the hall. Talking amongst themselves and the females on the radio show, they talked about it; and then seeing Kathy standing in the studio next door, they asked her what she thought. Before she knew it they drug her in the on air studio and sat her down and got her in on the conversation. I was on the phone talking about how wonderful my girlfriend was and they were asking her how this guy should propose as I worked my way down the hall and to the glass in front of the studio were she could see me! She told me later that she thought the voice sounded like me but didn't put it together cause she was still thinking she was really there for work!
Thanks to Jeff and Jer, Tommy and the rest of the guys at Star 100.7 that helped out!
