Teachers in Manila

This is a group of teachers on Labor Day weekend. Everyone was new to Clark, and had just arrived from the States. We took the Embassy bus to Manila for that first weekend. School started on the following Tuesday. This was a typical Filipino dinner, hosted by the man in the white shirt and tie on the left side. He was a Scottish business man that one of our group knew from somewhere. Most of the gals in the picture were from what we called the Midwestern Delegation - Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota. The guys are from various places. One gal, Mary, was from California and was the only person with experience in the DOD school program.

One of us got deathly ill after this meal and had to stay in Manila in a hotel - alone. Everyone else took the bus back to start school. This gal got back a day later. Apparently it was a mild case of food poisoning or allergy, but it was rough!
