The Southwest Brass, a dominating force in the cultural life of Arizona,
has been entertaining and educating since 1967. As the oldest
professional chamber ensemble in Arizona, the SWB stays on the leading
edge with an unparalleled commitment to excellence and superior
innovations both on the concert stage and in the classroom. Known for
its entertaining, casual rapport with audiences and virtuosic renditions
of classics to jazz, standing ovations are the rule rather than the
exception with this dynamic group.
Recent highlights include a live performance on Channel 3 in Phoenix and
a feature in a Chamber Music America national journal. In great demand,
the SWB performs over 200 concerts in a season alone, including its own
Quality Time Series of Baroque and Romantic masterpieces. HOWL WITH THE
WOLVES, a new edutainment concert/slide show, integrates sounds of
nature with live music, bringing Arizona habitats and conservation
concepts to life for children. The Plylar Academy has authored,
published, and distributed nationally a series of instructional
book/cassette programs for beginning through advanced brass students.
Consequently, the SWB has been invited to present workshops on these
innovative programs at the 1996 Arizona Music Educators' Conference.
Originally created by Phoenix Symphony players (from 1967-1976 known as
the Phoenix Brass), the Southwest Brass was the resident brass faculty
at Arizona State University from 1976-1982. Since 1982, the SWB has
been an independent institution, touring 12 of the United States and
every Mexican state, often sponsored by the Arizona Commission on the
Arts. The SWB has been a premier trend setting Roster company since the
ACA inception and has impressed young and old alike in every corner of
the state from the Hopi Nation to Yuma.
Its highly acclaimed recordings OLE!, TRUMPETS AND ORGAN SPECTACULAR,
ENCORE, and CHRISTMAS WITH THE SWB continue to thrill audiences
internationally, while often being compared with the famed Canadian
Brass.
Trained by the world's top artists at notable conservatories and
festivals, the SWB educational contributions include professorships at
major universities throughout the United States, summer music festival
instruction, Young Audience Concerts, and Artist Residencies for
Kindergarten through College levels. The Arizona Brass Workshop and the Plylar Academy of Music (both created and administered by the SWB)
provide these seasoned professionals with an outlet to pass on the
legacy of excellence bestowed upon them.
Throughout its illustrious history, the SWB has boasted members
associated with major symphony orchestras such as Chicago, Los Angeles,
Cleveland, Boston, Seattle, Louisville, Baltimore, Montreal, Bogata, and
Hong Kong. Also major recording artists and studio musicians in Los
Angeles, big band/jazz specialists, and military band veterans have
combined their expertise make the SWB what it is today.
The Southwest Brass is dedicated and committed to enriching the cultural
lives of Arizonans and will continue to be a driving force impacting
millions well into the 21st century.
